Meet April Horton: Tostobueno, The Ultimate Tostonera’s® #1 FAN!
Last year — I, Annette E Alvarez, a proud Tosto-Chick, did not make it to Castle Hill’s Bronx YMCA, Bon Appetit night where area restaurants get together to feed the Bronxites whose donation to the Y gives them an “all food pass”. I may not have been there in ’07 but trust me — I knew what I had missed. I’m the one who puts all these blogs together and, well this is what Chef DonClark wrote about Bon Appetit ’07.
“Please try it. I promise, you’ll like it,” I kept repeating to her disbelief.
It’s a perfect September night at the Castle Hill YMCA in the Bronx, not too cool, gentle breeze blowing and the smells of delicious dishes wafting through the air. The food was brought in by local restaurants to help raise money for the Y. But amid this almost magical setting, standing just outside the Tostobueno® booth is a black woman casting me a disbelieving eye. I’d just spent the last minute convincing her to try one of my signature surprise tostones. “Now I like tostones, but tostones with cinnamon apples and ice cream, I don’t know.” She said. I was nearly on my knees by now. “I guarantee you’re going to love it.” I said. OK. She finally gave in. Across the table this odd confection went. There was a bite, the eyes closing, and then there was the kind of savoring that is generally reserved only for a fabulous piece of chocolate and then the imperceptible shudder from head to toe, then the affirmation.
Imagine my surprise when the lady Chef DonClark describes above came back for more, one year later. Let me introduce you to who I have dubbed Tosto’s #1 fan: April Horton, Director of External Affairs for Verizon.
